FMEdays 2019 – locate the future!

Great presentations and an impressive scenery.

From March 18th to 20th more than 330 users from all over Europe met in Bonn, Germany for FMEdays. The participants, invited by Safe Software and con terra, were thrilled by the impressive venue where the event took place: the former plenary building of the German Bundestag in the World Conference Center in Bonn.

More than 200 FME users participated in the pre-conference workshops and learned about diverse topics, such as open data and 3D data processing or the use of FME Server and FME Cloud.

A highlight of the opening plenary was the presentation of Safe Software’s co-founders Don Murray and Dale Lutz. They introduced the new features of FME 2019 and amazed the attendees with their unique personality and professionalism.

In the following series of short tech talks, SAP demonstrated the impressive capabilities of the SAP HANA Spatial Database, Esri Germany presented the advanced analysis and mapping functionalities of the ArcGIS platform and con terra illustrated how sustainable and efficient individual solutions can be developed by combining the above-mentioned technologies and their own. In addition the audience listened to great keynotes from Yann Rebois of the International Committee of the Red Cross and Jed Sundwall of Amazon Web Services.

The Deutsche Telekom hosted the first FMEdays Hackathon that took place in the Telekom headquarter close to the venue. In a creative atmosphere all participants made use of open data as well as of interesting data sets provided by Telekom to develop great solutions with FME 2019.

About 40 user presentations took place in parallel sessions on both Tuesday and Wednesday. The topic range was diverse, including how the Deutsche Telekom uses FME to plan the expansion of the fiber optic network, how DEA uses FME to validate geodata and how the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising uses FME to integrate, process and publish their database.

In addition to the user presentations, many technical lectures were held by Safe Software and con terra. Their focus was on tips and tricks for FME Desktop and FME Server, technical innovations and spatial data processing.

Inspiring presentations and the great atmosphere provided by the historic plenary building were the key elements of the success of these three extraordinary conference days in Bonn.
