The Challenge

The sovereign tasks of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Forestry Department (Landesforst MV) include advising and promoting private and commercial foresters, forest supervision, protection, fire protection, and wildlife impact monitoring. Forestry planning, research, and forest protection reporting services are also part of its remit.

In view of growing tasks and dwindling resources, digitization is an important step toward increasing efficiency. Nevertheless, changing work locations between the forest and the office often leads to double entries and error-prone processes.

The introduction of mobile-based forest management is intended to remedy this situation: data can be recorded, processed, and evaluated directly on site, which increases efficiency and reduces errors. Important factors here are compatibility with existing IT infrastructure, compliance with defined processes and standards, and the automated provision of specialist applications on employees' mobile devices.

The Solution

The customer was provided with an Android-based application for mobile forest management, which is centrally deployed and managed on service devices. The following specialist applications have been integrated so far:

  • The forest information module provides key specialist information,
  • the electronic forest protection reporting system (eWSM module) enables immediate recording of damaged areas
  • and a hunting facility module supports hunting-related tasks.

The bundled app solution allows easy switching between applications with a common database and efficient reuse of existing functionality—a decisive advantage over other approaches. A uniform design and structure ensure intuitive operation, even on small tablets.

The Solution is Based On

map.apps (incl. FGL offline Speech)

ArcGIS Enterprise

FME Server

Nextcloud | SQL Server | Android | CORDOVA

The Benefits

Thanks to the modules developed, users can access all relevant specialist information digitally at any time. The integrated GIS functionalities also enable further data to be derived. Functions such as digital notepads or the management of hunting facilities allow individual data to be recorded on site. The eWSM module enables immediate damage area recording in the field, eliminating the need for double entries in the office. This not only saves time but also improves data quality.

Mobile forest management thus contributes significantly to the digitization of forestry processes, increases efficiency in everyday work, and offers further expansion potential thanks to its modular structure.
